I just heard from a man about the initiative to encourage Coastal Rowing & Racing around the Scottish Coastline and Lochs. He has built a St Ayles Skiff and I immediately thought of a book he might like to read.
It’s called ‘From Tree to Sea’, by Ted Frost. It was published by Terence Dalton in 1985. Ted was apprenticed as a shipwright in 1916 and he tells about the building of a wooden steam drifter in Lowestoft about that time. It has the most charming pencil illustrations, along with a wealth of detail about the boats that you won’t find in many places. He also talks about the men with whom he worked with great humour and affection.
