Back in 2004 the then editor of ‘Yachting World’ magazine proposed an idea for a regular feature built around nautical literature. I was delighted with this opportunity because my study was already lined with a wide-ranging library of maritime titles. He anticipated that the series might run to half a dozen articles, but ten years later the column is still going strong.

This book is a compendium of about forty favourites. I’ve omitted most of what one might describe as ‘mainstream’ because these are readily available. Some of the accounts will prove unknown to many, as occasional pages have been culled from a club journal, the yachting press or even a personal log.

Each chapter is preceded by my short introduction, explaining something of the author and the circumstances which have lead to the wild and wonderful incident being recounted.

The contents are divided into the following sections:

Reviews:

‘An absorbing compilation.’  Classic Boat

‘Cunliffe has eschewed the famous but well-used Slocums and Knox-Johnstons in favour of lesser-known authors. What his writers lack in notoriety they make up in literary style – usually understated and laced with humour as dry as Plymouth gin….Many of the authors are out of print. So this is not only a collection for a bedside table or a boat’s saloon, but a handy sampler which will steer the reader towards a new and exciting group of authors.’  The Marine Quarterly

‘While I’ve found several old favorites, I’m enjoying many new pieces which have pointed the way to more books.’Vineyard Gazette

‘Illustrated with photos from the original books, as well as from Cunliffe’s own archives, the volume contains a wealth of on-water wisdom.’  Soundings

‘Contains a wealth of yachting wisdom.’  48 North
