A useful way to encourage the hands to wear harness tethers on deck is to make it easy. Instead of hanging them around your neck when they may not be wanted, try keeping them hitched either side of the cockpit – one end clipped to the jackstay ready for action, the other on the guardrail. Anyone already going forward wearing a deflated lifejacket now has two choices. Either clamber over the thing (inconvenient) or grab it and clip it to the lifejacket ring (easy as falling over the side!).
