Novice skippers have lots to think about, but if secondary port tidal heights are making you doubt whether you are ready to take a yacht to sea yet, stop worrying! Remember for now that only in exceptional circumstances will there be less water than it says on the chart. If the soundings indicate that you can float all the way from where you are to where you intend to go, you may miss out on a few short cuts, but you will at least be safe. In most places it’s more important that the arrows in the stream atlas are going your way. Learn how to work the tidal heights as soon as possible though, or you’ll strike out some great ports of call.
