It’s all very well imagining that a roller genoa is the answer to all our prayers. It certainly makes life easier in light and moderate going, but when the big winds blow, most of them set like a retired Spiller’s Flour bag. The boat hiding behind this large braking sea has rolled hers away and is using a hanked-on blade headsail and a beautifully reefed mainsail. She is powering to windward. The photographer was sailing a chartered boat of far greater size without the option to change headsails. He was sliding sideways so fast that he only just managed his shot before disappearing over the horizon to leeward.
