Hang ′em high

Approaching any alongside situation – especially a raft-up – it’s best not to assume too much, particularly where fenders are concerned. Sling ′em too low for a motorboat with flared topsides and they might as well have stayed in the locker. The same can hold good with another sailing boat if she’s a different size, so always take a good long look at what you’ll be lying against before committing to fender height. A simple clove hitch on the top guardrail ensures easy adjustment if you get it wrong.
