Laying up for the winter, you can take away all the worry of gales blowing onto the berth by suspending a big fender fore-and-aft from the pontoon cleats. Then when the boat heels towards the berth she can’t ‘duck under’ her usual fenders. It also takes the strain off guardrails and stanchions. Secured in the right place with the yacht’s lines all sorted, it will handle all the load, leaving its smaller sisters with no more than backup duty. If it’s too big to stow on board, so much the better. When spring comes around, stuff it in the garage loft to wait for its moment of glory next November.
