When you are stepping ashore with a rope to tie up the boat, make the bight (middle) fast aboard, then pick up only what you will need, plus a little more for contingencies. If you lug the whole coil along with you, it may well foul up and it will certainly be more difficult to handle. This is particularly so when you are handing a rope across to the crew of a boat to which you are about to raft up.
