It makes obvious sense when crossing the Channel to carry the ship’s registration or SSR document, plus anything that proves you’ve paid the VAT. There’s also your VHF radio licence, insurance documents etc. Less blatant, but equally important, are the following. The French have rules about them which the customs have been known to enforce. Some are obvious. Some less so.
- A life jacket for everyone on board
- Carry an up-to-date flare pack and don’t ship your favourite out-of-date flares. They’re illegal in France
- Make sure the liferaft (if carried) is serviced and in date. This is mandatory
- Keep a paper log that you can show to boarding officials if asked.
