When you’re running the distance down to a waypoint without a plotter to guide you, unless you’re getting close and it’s foggy, it’s generally less stressful on a sailing boat to use the ‘compass’ page of the GPS rather than the ‘rolling road’. Note the two bottom numbers on this GPS receiver. All the skipper need do is adjust his course steered so that the ‘track’ (course over the ground) coincides with the ‘bearing’ of the waypoint and keep it there as the distance scrolls down ─ always assuming he has first checked the chart to make sure he isn’t steering into some hazard or other!
