Back in the days of commercial sail, some skippers took pride in never letting the focsle hands know where they were, or how far they had to go before they could roister ashore for a drink. It isn’t for us to criticise those masters of the sea, but maintaining this tradition on a modern yacht doesn’t really wash. Keep the crew informed, from the moment you slip your lines until they can smell the garlic and fresh bread. It’s easy to forget this simple morale-booster, but if someone’s feeling a bit ‘Tom and Dick’, knowing his misery is only going to last another couple of hours might help him hang on.
