If you’re going off watch and you’re feeling a little ‘Tom and Dick’ (that’s ‘seasick’ in East London), don’t even think about struggling into a bunk up forward that may have your name on it. The best chance you have of survival is to nip below, keep your kit on, and crash in the saloon. The motion is less there and you’re straight down into the horizontal mode which is well-known to be far less sick-making. When the boat is modern and has no sea berths amidships, chuck some cushions on the floor, if there are no sailbags, and crash out on those. Take a large saucepan with you just in case!
